Echunga Netball Club 2023 Presidents Report

2023 – our first “normal” season since 2019. No COVID lockdowns or requirements to stay at home if you were a close contact and didn’t the wider netball community embrace the freedom. It was exciting to see everyone back on the courts both at training and matches, exciting to catch up properly with long time team mates or rivals and exciting to play our game again for another season. We welcomed back players and welcomed into the Club new players who brought with them experience or a wide eyed excitement at a return to the game or maybe their first season ever.

The new inclusive uniform introduced in 2022 of shorts and top did not take off across the wider netball community. Some of our players chose to wear this option again in 2023 while others reverted back to the dress. Either uniform is easy to wear with no substantial difference to be seen on court. We will continue to offer the inclusive uniform to our members.

Thank you as always to the sponsors, life members and patrons that continue to support our Club. Your contributions in the many & varied ways this happens are appreciated and respected by us all.

2023 saw Echunga well represented in the Association individual awards. Congratulations to:

  • Caleb Dunning – 11&U Div 2 B&F
  • Alice Marshall – 15&U Div 3 R/Up B&F
  • Paige Clark – 15&U Div 2 R/Up B&F
  • Rebecca Hull – 3rd Junior Whistle Award
  • Felicity Duffield – Gold Whistle & Team of the Year Umpire
  • our players chosen to represent Mid Hills in 2024

The 2022 President’s report mentioned the Club moving to our Future Stars Academy in place of the Net Set Go programme. This first ran from November 2022 until March 2023. The programme & timing proved successful with great feedback received. Using our first experience with the Academy we are in the process of the 2nd Future Stars programme which commenced in November 2023. Carmen Harkness is being supported by Glenis Sward with 12 future players attending & enjoying the sessions. Thanks to you both for your hard work & input into our future.

Fundraising continues to be important to the Club. We took part in Bunnings BBQ, wine drives and the return of the All British Day. 2023 also saw us participate in a Sports/Sponsors Race at the Oakbank Easter Carnival. We were chosen to attend a draw in which we selected a horse at random to run in the race on our behalf. Nat & Hayley Steward not only attended the draw but also picked the winning horse – netting the Club $5,000 in winnings which have been put to good use purchasing some extra uniforms, equipment & just generally topping up the Bank account for the future. Another new initiative was joining the Netball SA Community Raffle. Netball SA supply the prizes, run an online purchasing system & the Club benefits receiving full funding from all of the tickets sold on our platform. We will certainly partake again in the future.

Our soup and sizzle nights at a few trainings bring together families and promote a sense of belonging within the Club. Our breakups, both Jnr & Snr, held at the German Arms are well attended with the current afternoon/evening format working well.

PlayHQ continues to evolve. We are grateful for the time & expertise that Jaye Smith gives to ensuring we are current, aware & learning with each new procedure. The information packs that Jaye produces are exceptional.

Treasurer James Roberts is thrown new fees or charges which then relate to every player nearly every year but keeps our accounts immaculately. Our communication with our members continues to be such an important part of our Club. Jo Hayhurst keeps us all on our toes with emails and text messages when there are issues of importance. Our Social Media posts keep us all up to date. Thanks to Chloe Schaefer for taking on that role in 2023. Amelia Trabilsie has been our Secretary for 2 years & is looking to pass on the baton this year. Thanks for your commitment and input Amelia. Jade Vanzo, Carmen Harkness, Phil Crowder, Nat Steward & Di Gray are the other faces on our Committee – everyone does their job, puts their hand up and gives back to the Club. We meet monthly or when necessary with these members deserving more than just your thanks.

Two of our Life Members are taking a break this season. I use that term as I’m sure we’ll see them again but for now, John & Narelle (Schaefer), enjoy your holidays & your life change. Thank you for more than anyone will ever know or appreciate.

Oh, I haven’t forgotten…..the triple treat finishes this report…..3 premierships, 11&U Div 2, 15&U Div 2 & B3’s. What a day we had!!! Lots of support from the red & blue all day. It was only 10 seconds that possibly cost us a 4th…..well done to the A2’s who fell short in probably the most exciting match of the day.

We look forward to the 2024 season. A brand new challenge with “Inters” replacing 17&U and 15&U. A learning curve for everyone but what an opportunity it gives. Plus 13’s head back to Saturdays. For the first time in over 20 years the whole Club will be in the same place on the same day.

YOUR input & support is needed & necessary in our 77th year.

Echunga Netball Club 2022 Presidents Report

2022 was quite a year for our Club as we celebrated our 75th anniversary. Given the era of 1947 and the challenges those pioneer women would have faced it is a great achievement that they forged the stepping stones for our Club. They could not have imagined the number of players, teams, coaches, umpires and just everyday women and men that have built on that legacy. They could not have imagined our courts, our clubrooms, shed and the various styles of uniform. On September 17 th we celebrated our Club, remembering those pioneers and recognising the Life Members that have poured so much of their lives into maintaining that legacy. Combined with our annual end of season dinner it was wonderful to see our Life Members mingling with our current members and hearing some of their memories. A photo board, display of old uniforms and a reunion of the first, 1981, A grade premiers after we entered the Mid Hills competition were highlights of the night. A snapshot of our History was run in the Courier and Weekend Herald newspapers. These articles along with historical posts on Facebook and Instagram drew interest from the wider community.

We pay tribute to Life Member Jennifer Bailey who sadly passed away last year. Jenni was fondly remembered during our celebrations.

Before that we managed a full season of netball, the first since 2019 however the impact of COVID was still present and possibly greater than 2020 & 2021. In the previous years the whole Association was put on hold at the same time as directed by the Government at the time. In 2022 COVID was still in the wider community and members of the Association were advised that if they had COVID or were a close contact they should not attend the Mid Hills Complex (or Echunga training). This of course saw sudden withdrawals from teams and it cannot be overstated the credit to all members of Echunga which includes past players which saw everyone pitch in and help each other out just to field a team. Thank you to you all for your commitment to our Club.

The new section of the fence is now installed. Along with the welcome inclusion of some top value pole protectors won in a competition through Kayo Sports this lifted the feel of the area. Thank you to everyone who gave their time for that task. Our new inclusive uniform of shorts and top was a first for Mid Hills. While other Clubs “offered” this option no other Club ran with it. The players that chose this uniform were comfortable and there were often sideline comments from spectators about how good they looked and how hard it was to tell that they were actually different to the dresses. Both styles look the same in action.

Thank you also to the continued support of our sponsors, life members and patrons. Your contributions to our club in the many ways this happens are appreciated and respected.

2022 also saw the Association reinstate individual awards.
Congratulations to:

  • Caleb Dunning – 11&U Div 2 B&F
  • Alice Marshall – 13&U Div 3 B&F
  • Ruby Trabilsie – 13&U Div 3 R/Up B&F
  • Ruby Kettlestring – 15&U Div 2 R/Up B&F (Joint)
  • Paige Clarke – 15&U Div 2 R/Up B&F (Joint)
  • Rebecca Hull – Junior Whistle Award & C Grade Umpiring Badge
  • Georgia Wheatley – A Grade Rising Star R/Up
  • our players chosen to represent Mid Hills in 2023

Congratulations to our 15 Div 2’s who flew the flag into the preliminary final round. Our teams fought hard all year and the smiles on faces are reward for Coaches.

Carmen Harkness stepped back into the role of Coach for our Net Set Go programme. The kids loved their sessions and while playing netball is a year or so away for most of them there is a lot to look forward to. We revamped our beginner programme with a trial of the Echunga Netball Club Future Stars Academy. To be held over a period before and after Christmas the timing of the completion of the programme will see members be able to move straight into playing netball the year they turn 7. The Club developed a new singlet for these members and time will tell how this trial goes.

Our fundraising efforts weren’t as COVID impacted in 2022. We took part in Bunnings BBQ, Footy teas, wine drives and raffles. 2022 also saw the first Field Day hosted by Stirling Rotary held at Echunga Rec Grounds. We took part providing cake and coffee to attendees. We also prepared and hosted a morning tea for the MG Car Club with wonderful feedback for our efforts. Most importantly however was the return of our soup and sizzle nights which always see the courts buzzing. At the end of the season we completely repaid the loan to the Rec Ground which assisted us with the court rebuild. Repaying $11,000 over less than 3 years in COVID times as well as finishing off the fence is a wonderful achievement.

The PlayHQ system came into being, in some ways user friendly in other ways definitely not. Jaye Smith takes each challenge on keeping the Club relevant and our procedures up to date. The information packs that come out early in the year are full of everything anyone needs to know – thanks Jaye. PlayHQ has not been particularly friendly to our Treasurer James Roberts. I’m sure there were many extra hours this year sorting out each payment that appears in our account. Our communication with our members continues to be such an important part of our Club. Jo Hayhurst keeps us all on our toes with emails and text messages when there are issues of importance. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages as well. Nat Steward, Chloe Schaefer & Amelia Trabilsie were new faces on our committee the latter taking on the role of Secretary for the first time.

Our Committee met monthly or when necessary. The members of the Committee deserve more than just your thanks. Without them our Club would not exist. Discussions are always open and frank, we are always looking to move our Club forward with the times but also take a great pride in the history that our Club has. All of our Committee, Coaches, Umpires, Managers and helpers are volunteers – they have busy lives yet they find the time to lay the platform for our players to enjoy the game and succeed. A smile, a thank you, a “can I do anything?” or “what can I do?” will have more impact than you can imagine.

We look forward to the 2023 season and to our Club continuing our tradition.

Echunga Netball Club 2021 Presidents Report

It seems like the last Presidents report, in February 2021, was such a long time ago but it wasn’t, it’s just that we’ve all had a huge 2021. Last year’s report touched on the impact COVID had on our reduced 2020 season and the safeguards we had to put in place to ensure our members safety. 2021 was impacted again but in slightly different circumstances. The Club got through preseason, trials and the season commenced. Our players that were chosen to play in the Mid Hills Representative teams got some carnivals in, including, importantly, Country Championships after a barren 2020. Midseason saw the hiatus as the State Government put sport on hold for 2 weeks in order to control a COVID outbreak. Mid Hills abandoned 2 rounds and the season was picked up at the date we recommenced. Finals were played and breakups took place with COVID restrictions always in mind. I want to pay tribute to all our committee, coaches, umpires and managers. Despite all copping with interruptions and extra demands on their normal, everyday life, they always worked hard, together, and with the complete intent of ensuring our teams and players were able to take to the court and have some sort of normality as far as sport and netball went. As in 2020 there were many, many players and teams across Australia that did not compete at all. Thank you to you all for your commitment to our Club.

Our rebuilt courts had a lot more use in 2021 and they are great to train and play on. Our deepest thanks to JG Harkness Excavations for allowing us to use the temporary fencing for such a long period of time. The temporary fencing only came down in the past few months and as I write this the new fence is being installed. Thank you to everyone assisting with that task.

Thank you also to the continued support of our sponsors, life members and patrons. Your contributions to our club in the many ways this happens are appreciated and respected.

2021 also saw the Association reinstate individual awards. Congratulations to:
– Riley Schaefer – A2 B&F
– Noah Dunning – 11&U Div 2 R/Up B&F
– Grace Crowder – A Grade Rising Star
– Felicity Duffield Gold Whistle Award
– our players chosen to represent Mid Hills in 2022

There must also be a mention and congratulations to Felicity Duffield for taking on the role of President of Mid Hills with passion and drive.

Congratulations to our A’s and B3’s winning through to the Grand Finals with the A Grade taking the ultimate accolade 5 years since Echunga were last on the honour board. Coach Felicity Duffield has worked tirelessly over the past 4 years challenging the players to work hard and as a team – congratulations Flick.

Our Net Set Go programme had a new look as Rosie Hayhurst took over the Coaching role. The players were always engaged, happy and active. We will miss Rosie this season as she moves into a life of teaching but look forward to seeing these young players come up through our ranks in coming years.

It seemed like our fundraising efforts were impacted again by COVID however there were more opportunities than 2020 with a Bunnings BBQ, Footy teas and wine drives continuing. We made further inroads into repaying our loan to the Rec Grounds and have the funds on hand to complete the fence rebuild. The most disappointing aspect of this was the inability to hold our monthly soup and sizzle nights – not from a want of trying just concerns about the way to achieve these without putting our members at risk considering the restrictions in place.

In the past couple of months we have seen the MyNetball system shut down and Netball SA move over to PlayHQ. Mid Hills have been a test case for the new system and for administrators at Association level a bit of a nightmare. Their groundwork however is building this space for us all and Jaye Smith has done an amazing job firstly building a new website for the Club and then manoeuvring her way through the new registration system and putting in place an amazing registration pack for the Club to use. The challenges have continued for our Treasurer James Roberts and he always has our finance reports and checks in hand. PlayHQ will impact here as well but as the learning curve continues James will also keep questioning and solving the issues. Our communication with our members is of the highest importance with all the events, dates, match information and anything else we need to the “out there” in the best of hands. Jo Hayhurst keeps our Club “relevant” and we often wake up to an email or text message with what we need to know. Felicity Duffield has also added another layer to the messaging to our members through regular Facebook and Instagram posts. Everything mentioned important tools in running our Club and keeping you involved in our game.

Our Committee meet monthly or when necessary. The members of the Committee take time from their already busy lives to ensure that our Club can function, move with the times and most importantly provide a space for our members to play the sport they love and for that we cannot say thank you more passionately. For 2022 we have introduced a new uniform option, singlet and shorts, promoting an inclusive environment for our
members.

4 of our committee received the ultimate accolade when Life Membership was presented to them at our Senior Breakup – Phil Crowder, Felicity Duffield, Jo Hayhurst and James Roberts have given our Club countless hours of their time and expertise spanning many facets of the Club. Congratulations and our deepest of thank to you all.

Another special mention must be made to Narelle Schaefer who has advised us she is stepping down from our Committee. Nic has held most roles possible in the Club at some stage of her long journey with us beginning as a player at 16 years of age and you will be missed however I hope we see you with a whistle or clipboard at the courts this year.

Our small community Club turns 75 this season – what an achievement for all the Volunteers that have paved the way for us and allowed us to continue their legacy. When that first meeting was held in 1947 sixteen ladies could not have imagined that their foresight would give members 75 years worth of belonging and participation in a sport that is constantly changing and challenging – will you accept that challenge and continue our proud tradition?

Volunteer – a person who freely offers to take part or undertake a task. Being a volunteer means that you are offering something – something that is not required nor an obligation. Most of the time, to volunteer means that you are working side by side with others. This connects you to other human beings as you are working toward a common goal. When you volunteer, you are making connections, friends and memories

We look forward to a full 2022 season and to you taking up the tradition.

Echunga Netball Club 2020 Presidents Report

Twelve months ago we had literally just commenced our court excavation and rebuild. As a Club this was a huge achievement that we reached, with the assistance of Mt Barker Council and Echunga Rec Grounds, despite the hurdles we hit along the way. The alleged federal government funding “rort” impacted us but we fought hard to get this done – while I mentioned last year how proud we can be – I do so again – this cannot be understated. The investigation by various government and media outlets saw still more reports and interviews take place over the year. We don’t expect this to bring any funding or assistance – we just want our story to be kept in the forefront of this saga. We expected to need additional funds if we hit substrate issues with water once the courts were dug up. While substrate wasn’t the issue, tree trunks that had sat rotting under the courts for over 50 years did hold water reserves and did raise the cost of the project, not out of reach as we had allowed for this possibility but just enough for us to draw on a loan from the Rec Grounds to see us complete the project. At the time of writing the fence is not reinstated and we thank Harkness Excavation for the loan of the temporary fencing. We also currently have a Grant application in to allow us to rebuild the fence – lets hope for a positive outcome.

While the rebuild was happening we started our trials and training on the tennis courts, all eagerly looking forward to 2020 netball. At the Mid Hills AGM Felicity Duffield joined the Board of Management which runs the day to day operation of the Association.

In mid March our lives were put on hold as the world was hit by COVID19. This pandemic saw major impacts on our day to day lives and saw sport, netball, put on hold for an undetermined time. We all adapted, changed our ways, learnt new ways and waited. South Australia was particularly amazing at working within rules and guidelines which meant various easing of restrictions. Each time we were ready to start back immediately to ensure you, our club, got back to some sort of normality and provide an outlet. First we could train, without contact – Get in, Train, Get out – you all did what we asked of you. Then came the news that contact sport could resume and that Mid Hills would attempt a season. Season 2020 started on 17 July, shortened to 8 matches with 2 knockout finals, changes to playing times and more time allowed between matches to get on/get off the courts. Fees were reduced, new cleaning procedures put in place, both at training and on match days and we were ready to go.

From over 40 Associations across SA less than 20 played season 2020 – over Australia the % was even less. We were the lucky ones, the ones that got back to playing the sport we love and you should all be proud of the way you embraced what we had to put in place to get through our season. The Mid Hills Representative teams didn’t get their carnival season but they got to play a “friendly” against Hills. There were no Best & Fairest awards and no umpire awards but there were still Grand Finals to be won. Congratulations to our B1’s and 15&U Div 2 teams that won their Grand Finals. The B1 record of 9 matches (2 draws and 3 one goal wins – including the Grand Final) was a little surreal but provides a great story.

Our Club values were certainly upheld in 2020:

Integrity   > Respect   > Excellence   > Community   > Development   > Commitment   > Enjoyment

Our Coaches had to rethink a few small things to deal with COVID…thankyou!!! Our umpires, support staff and committee were exceptional to just “be ready” and as soon as we got the go ahead we were off and running, prepared to do anything to get us back out there.

Our Net Set Go programme got started – stopped – started again as soon as it was possible to do so. Thanks again to Glenis Sward for running the 10 week programme. We are sorry to see Glenis leave our coaching ranks in 2021 and say the hugest of thank you’s for the years you have given to our Club. Hoping we’ll see you back again one day.

Congratulations to our Mid Hills Representative players who have been chosen for 2021 – let’s hope you see some carnival action this year.

Our Committee basically sat and waited for a little while there but they were ready from the moment (from every moment) that they needed to be. Our fundraising efforts were put on hold for a year however we got in the ABD in February 2020 and a wine drive at the end of the year as we strive to repay our loan and reinstate the fence. Special mention to our Treasurer James Roberts and registration guru Jaye Smith – keeping track of the various ins/outs, changes to fees, opening and closing registration periods must have been tough but they kept smiling and being there for anyone that needed help.

COVID also took a toll on our annual end of season dinners/breakups however we gathered as a Club under the trees next to the shed and finished with a picnic that was a pleasant, fun, new way, to celebrate the strange year that we had.

Mid Hills also achieved a 2020/2021 summer season, only finals remain, however the season was shut down for two weeks with a COVID scare. We don’t know what 2021 will hold but Echunga Netball Club will be there, providing all the opportunities we can to our members, doing whatever we need to do to get us on the courts. You are all part of our Club, we always need help….please…..if we ask put up your hand, if we don’t ask put up your hand – don’t expect “someone else” to do it.

We look forward to a full 2021 season – matches commence 30 April – we will be ready!!!
